Sketches of Spain

Miles Davis

We start this blog with the LP currently on our turntable: Miles Davis’ Sketches of Spain. Unlike his ubiquitous Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain doesn’t seem to get the love it deserves. Emerging from Miles listening to an LP of Concierto de Aranjuez by the Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo and then working with the amazing Gil Evans (hopefully we will feature an LP of his here at some point in the future) he recorded Sketches, starting with his own interpretation of the Concierto. The whole LP evokes the landscape of Spain most beautifully and is a vibe all its own from beginning to end. This is the Mobile Fidelity “original master” pressing and it sounds superb though it probably contains a digital step – worth getting a copy if you can. Or just enjoy the YouTube clip here.
